DIY ART FOR YOUR APARTMENT
By Bryn Huntpalmer
The difference between a living space, and a home, often
hinges on what you can do to add an element of your own personality to a space.
DIY art projects can range from the practical, such as building a new table, to
the aesthetic, including creating new focal points in a room. With a little bit
of effort, you can put your own stamp on your apartment without using too much
money to do the job.
WOODEN COFFEE TABLE WITH INDUSTRIAL PIPES//
This is a different take on the coffee table, using roughly
cut wood and industrial pipes to create a rustic look. It also has the
advantage that nothing needs to be nailed, tacked or glued together, and the
industrial pipes create a very strong base for the table. This coffee table is
an instant conversation piece, and you can readily size it to whatever the
space constraints of your apartment might be.
REPURPOSE OLD ART AND MEDIA FOR A COLLAGE//
Lots of homes have art pieces scattered about, but how many
truly tell the story of the occupants? A collage can be quickly assembled from
old newspaper clippings and other media items to represent a story in a
different fashion than the standard collection of wedding or graduation photos.
Every member of a household can create a personalized collage, allowing each person
to share their own story. These pieces are a great way to find out which guests
are paying attention and which ones are just passing through.
PUT UP A BRICK VENEER//
Nothing breaks up a space more than a contrasting color and
texture on an inside wall. Brick walls always look great, and they instantly
make a room a feel warmer and more like part of a home. The look of brick can
be tailored quickly to create a retro feeling, something more industrial or
even a rustic aesthetic.
Since you probably won’t be able to gain permission to make
major changes to the appearance of an apartment, you can use
removable wallpaper to accomplish the same
look.
FIND A FOCAL POINT//
Why draw the line at adding art projects to an apartment
when you can treat an entire room as an art project? Interior design is a great
way to present your apartment as your own personal haven, and the first step in
creating a more artistic presentation of a space is to establish a defined
focal point. The room’s focal point can be any number of things. For example, a
large mirror that you DIY to make it look more substantial can be used to
define a specific region of the room as a focal point.
